Strain Profile: Skunk is "supposed" to be an IBL, a stabilized line. Who can tell with all the different breeders what each "Skunk" is?
If what you have is really pure skunk #1 (as it is described), you would have plants that should breed true for at least a few generations. After a couple generations of brother-sister pairing, it could start to degenerate because it would loose whatever little genetic variation it had left. Depending on the parent selection, it shouldn't decline radically even with the extreme inbreeding a longterm closet seed producer would subject it to. There aren't many unfit genes left in skunk#1.
Skunk (the IBL) is generally pretty good weed. It will never compete with hybrid crosses of itself with unrelated lines, because that is where hybrid vigor comes from. That's why skunk is in the pedigree of so many of the "killer" strains. It is outstanding breeding material, even though it isn't the ultimate by itself. I find skunk to be pretty damn strong, with a strong taste/smell that isn't very complex, and a reliable up high with out any quirks or interesting surprises.
All beans aren't good for all purposes. Skunk really shines as a "heritage" strain that can be kept for generations, good for newbies and people who only want good weed and aren't interested wringing in the last % out of a grow. It is also nearly a mandatory tool in a serious breeders kit.
But if you want the latest whiz-bang strain, buy one of skunk's progeny. Just be aware that hybids have their own weaknesses. Horses for courses.
